We would like to ask that you consider this letter in determining the future of South Head, Sydney Harbour National Park.

South Head has a unique historical story that combines our military, colonial and, importantly, the history of the coastal La Perouse Aboriginals. We believe this is a story that should be told. The restoration and regeneration of this unique area, including the improvement of the public spaces, making them fully accessible, would benefit not only our local communities, but the whole of Sydney.

Sydney needs to continue offering this type of beautiful experience, that will encourage more visitors. Our economy is slowing and tourism is one industry that will continue to provide jobs, for those that need them. It will also bring much needed economic stability.

Nature walks are popular worldwide; our communities need nature in and around them to thrive. The National Parks and Wildlife Service do a great job, but we know resources are limited; they need help.

We also support partnerships between life crisis charities and Gap Park Conservancy, that will provide professional counsellors based at Gap Park, who will be present to help those who need support. We will also provide a new, higher, environmentally conscious, structurally designed suicide prevention barrier from HMAS Watson to Signal Hill Reserve.

We believe there is a need to actively respect the Disabilities Discrimination Act 1992 and the Age Discrimination Act 2004. We therefore join the Attorney-General of Australia and Minister Ward in support of Nature Walks’ proposal for an environmentally conscious, free, accessible, pathway from Gap Park to South Head.

Sincerely,
